The assassination of the Austrian Archduke Francis Ferdinand in 1914 is
considered the official cause of World War I,
which was fought in Europe from 1914 to 1918. When World
War I began, President Wilson tried to keep America neutral. After
Germans sank the British liner Lusitania, he demanded an end to submarine
warfare. By 1917 German aggression and American public opinion forced Wilson
and the Congress to declare war. This collection:
- presents key documents and memoirs from the period
- offers literary perspectives on the times
- documents the era in print and photographs
