Multicultural America

Multicultural America is a collection of literature by Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans. It is intended for use in middle school literature or interdisciplinary classes. The text is divided into six thematic units, each reflecting significant features of the multicultural experience. Part One focuses on the concept of homelands, and shows students different ways of looking at their homelands and those of other groups. Part Two focuses on traditions, and how various traditions and customs work together to create a culture. Part Three focuses on growing up, and the different kinds of rites of passage young people of different ethnic groups face. Part Four focuses on families, especially discussing how different family units work and how grandparents, other relatives, and ancestors can figure into a family. Part Five discusses the difficulties that people face when straddling two worlds, the old culture and the new. This is especially difficult when language and religion conflict with the new culture. Part Six discusses struggles, and their impact on each ethnic group as it became part of America.
