Classic Retelling

Charles Dickens’s novel Great Expectations is set in Victorian England, as the Industrial Revolution and other social upheavals were transforming the country. As the novel opens, the main character, Pip, has been orphaned and is living with his sister and her husband Joe. Pip is a simple boy at heart and expects to become a blacksmith when he grows up, like Joe. As the story moves along, Pip makes the acquaintance both of a convinct named Magwitch and of the wealthy Miss Haversham and her ward Estella. As he gets older, he decides that he wants to become a gentleman and eventually marry Estella, despite her cruelty toward him. His experiences with these and other characters, who come from all stations of life, eventually teach Pip what to value in those around him. This retelling
