On February 4, 1861, a group of seven southern states seceded from the Union and formed a new nation, the Confederate States of America. With former Mississippi Senator Jefferson Davis as its first president, the "country" was founded under a constitution that closely resembled that of the United States, except that it recognized the ownership of slaves as a fundamental and protected right of its citizens. On April, 12, 1861, Confederate troops surrounded Fort Sumter, in Charleston harbor, formally beginning the Civil War. This collection:
  • presents key documents and memoirs from the period
  • offers literary perspectives on the times
  • documents the era in print and photographs
