The story of ancient Rome contains all of the elements that make the study of history so fascinating. Roman history is filled with stories of heroism, greed, courage, the thirst for power, religious struggles, and personal sacrifice. It is a critically important period in the development of civilization. The Roman Republic and Empire still exert a powerful influence on the lives of modern humans just as they influenced the whole of Europe and the Middle East more than 1,500 years ago. Language, architecture, foods, technologies, literature, religion, government, ideas, and values are but a few of the contemporary fields with legacies from ancient Rome.

The story of ancient Rome involves a cast of memorable characters—generals and soldiers, emperors and slaves, scholars and artists, geniuses and fools. These people had the same needs and motivations that still drive civilizations today. Their individual stories help us to understand the times in which they lived. The period is so filled with the famous and infamous that Ancient Rome can introduce readers to only a few.

Selections cover the period during which Rome moved from being a republic to an empire. Lives of memorable leaders such as Julius and Augustus Caesar, Paul’s introduction of Christianity, the tragedy at Pompeii, and the daily lives of the people are just a few of the stories told. Roman history has been dramatized, idealized, and often sensationalized. Rome’s grandeur and corruption are both parts of what made Roman civilization live in history. Ancient Rome presents a balanced, yet intriguing look at this important and influential period of history.
