Edgar
Allan Poe always thought of himself as a poet, defining poetry as "the rhythmic
creation of beauty." Poe valued his poetry very highly, but he is remembered
most for his short stories. Some of his stories, such as "The Fall of the
House of Usher," are Gothic tales of the macabre that feature skilled creation
of atmosphere and unique settings. Others, such as "The Murders in the Rue
Morgue," are suspenseful detective stories, tales of lurid and unusual crimes.
This collection, which includes examples of both Poe's short stories and
his poetry,
- presents key historical and cultural information about publishing
in this period
- includes line art illustrations of several selections
- offers a photograph of and biographical information on the author
